Prince Harry and Prince William’s brotherly bond may have disintegrated rapidly since the former stepped back from royal life, but as pictures from their childhood show they were once so close they dressed in matching outfits.
In a series of pictures, some with their mother and father Princess Diana and King Charles, the boys look adorable in matching top and shorts sets chosen by the late Princess, something the Duke of Sussex once made light of.
In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, he explained: “I genuinely think she got satisfaction out of dressing myself and William up in the most bizarre outfits – normally matching.
“It was weird shorts and little shiny shoes with the old clip-on. Looking back at the photos it just makes me laugh and I think, ‘How could you do that to us?'”
However in his memoir Spare Harry uses their wardrobe choices to suggest drama between the pair was already brewing, as he revealed: “Willy always hated it when anyone made the mistake of thinking of us as a package deal. He loathed it when mummy dressed us in the same outfits… I barely took notice. I didn’t care about clothes, mine or anyone else’s… But for Willy it was pure agony to wear the same blazer, the same tight shorts, as me.”

For a photoshoot at Charles’s beloved Highgrove, Diana dressed her boys in matching blue and white striped sporty two-piece sets as the family stood in the meadow in front of the house.
While at Kensington Palace in the 80s the young princes are also matching in gingham shirts as they played happily on the rocking horses, a slightly bigger one for William as he is two years older.
More often than not, the boys were in shorts, lemon yellow for a flight up to Aberdeen to visit the Queen at Balmoral and red for Christmas.
Sadly Harry and William’s relationship is now in tatters, 26 years after the tragic death of their mother in a car crash in Paris.
The successor to her Princess of Wales title, William’s wife Kate, has reportedly been working behind the scenes to get the pair back on speaking terms.
Robert Jobson, the author of Our King Charles III: The Man and the Monarch Revealed, told the Daily Express US: “I’m not sure how much dialogue there is with William and Harry, at the moment, I think the only person that is helping the situation is Catherine, who is doing a brilliant job.
“First of all when the king wants to see his grandchildren, for example, it’s important to say that a lot of it has been through Catherine. But William and Harry, it’s a difficult one. I think as brothers they are more likely to get on the phone and have a conversation.”
He added: “It’s quite possible that one of them might pick up the phone to have a rant, but who’s going to pick up the phone on the other end? Because that’s not going to achieve anything.
“There’s also a lot of lack of trust at the moment between all the members of the family and Harry about where this information is going, because a lot of stuff has appeared in print by him.”
