There have already been murmurings that Martinelli could emerge as an adequate alternative to Alexandre Lacazette in the no.9 position given the transfer uncertainty surrounding Eddie Nketiah. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s ostracisation from the team doesn’t seem to be coming to an end, either.

In truth, Arsenal’s promising campaign has been driven by Smith Rowe and the exceptional Bukayo Saka rather than their former captain or Lacazette.

Given that Martinelli’s form has kept Smith Rowe on the sidelines in recent weeks, it would certainly make sense for Arteta to find a way to have his key homegrown trio on the pitch together at the same time over the next few months.

With Martin Odegaard’s rise to prominence in recent weeks, it feels as though Martinelli is the most likely, and the best suited, to have his role adapted slightly to try and fire the goals that would see Arsenal win back their seat at the table of Europe’s elite.

He certainly seems a more viable option than the likes of Aubameyang and Lacazette right now – which says everything about Martinelli’s rise and their fall over the past couple of months.
