Bank holidays 2021: When is the summer bank holiday?

Summer 2021 has proven a mixed bag this year, with the weather providing extreme highs of 32C before emptying inches of rain over the UK. At present, Storm Evert is passing over the country and will continue to direct extreme conditions until the end of this week. Regardless of the weather, people will still be searching for a day off or two, and the summer bank holiday will do just that.

When is the summer bank holiday?

The Government has sanctioned several bank holidays a year, a total of eight in 2021.

These include national holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Day, Easter and Good Friday.

But some are seasonal, with two in the spring and the summer bank holiday in August.

Although it’s some time to wait, Britons will have an additional holiday in 2022.

The Queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee next year, and the Government has given people a day off to celebrate on June 3.

Ministers announced the change – which will provide nine bank holidays in 2022 – last year.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said it hoped the nation would “come together” to celebrate.

The Government will mark the occasion with a “blockbuster weekend of celebrations”.

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden revealed he would introduce an extensive itinerary of activities that people “at a national and local level” can enjoy.

He said: “We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

“It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”
