Death threats as elderly wheelchair user robbed at ATM in Ohio

NewsDeath threats as elderly wheelchair user robbed at ATM in Ohio

A despicable thief threatened to kill an elderly man in a wheelchair, while he robbed him at an ATM in Ohio.

The disabled man, who has not been identified, was withdrawing cash from a PNC Bank in Columbus at around 2pm on July 12 when the robber pounced.

However, the BMX-riding thief was surprised by the fight the elderly gentleman put up. The 6ft2 and 220-pound assailant reportedly told his victim: “You’re stronger than I thought.”

The robber,  who police believe was in his late 20s, grabbed the money and the victim’s hands. And then he demanded that the disabled man gave up the cash.

Police say the thug then threatened the elderly man’s life.  He is reported to have said: “Let go of the money before I kill you.”

The shirtless suspect then ripped the bills from the man’s hands and made off on a black BMX-style bicycle. He was wearing blue shorts with a white underlayer. athletic socks and a black backpack.  Police have released CCTV image of a suspect.

While the offence was particularly cruel given the circumstances, Columbus actually recorded a drop in crime in 2022. Felonious assaults, robberies and rapes were all down compared to the previous year.

NBC4 reports that there were 140 murders in the city last year. This was a fall of more than 30 per cent compared to the previous year.

However, 2021 was a notably murderous one in Ohio’s capital.  The city’s homicide rate hit a record high that year, with 207 murders recorded.
