Disneyland's Fantasmic show ends in chaos as 45ft dragon prop bursts into flames

NewsDisneyland's Fantasmic show ends in chaos as 45ft dragon prop bursts into flames

An area of the Disneyland resort in California has caught fire, with holidaymakers sharing footage of the terrifying incident on social media.

The Anaheim Fire Department (AFD) told the station there have not been any injuries reported. The extent of the fire damage was not immediately known, local reports suggest.

Tom Sawyer Island has been part of Disneyland since 1956, allowing fans to enter the world of one of the main characters of Mark Twain’s book.

The fire involved a 45ft prop, with video showing what is believed to be a fire-breathing dragon ablaze as the tannoy informs spectators the show could not continue due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

AFD reported the incident had caused no injuries. The fire started during the Fantasmic show, which promises to wow viewers Wirth “enhanced special effects, state-of-the-art projections and superb pyrotechnics”.

During the show, Mickey Mouse is seen leading some of Disney’s most famous characters on parade, including Snow White’s evil queen.

In one section of the performance, the evil queen is seen to be conjuring some of the company’s most villainous characters, including the malevolent fairy Maleficent under the guise of a giant black and green fire-breathing dragon.

One person jokingly commented on some of the footage on social media: “Looks like Maleficent’s evil plan backfired.”

A witness told ABC 7 that the area near Frontierland had been cordoned off but the rest of the park had been left open.

Local reports suggest the incident was the result of a leak of flammable fluid seen dripping from the dragon’s mouth moments before it caught fire.

Sources told WDWNT that staff immediately rushed towards the prop wielding fire extinguishers after the dragon collapsed.

The Fantasmic show appears to have been removed from Disneyland’s performances schedule, with no show on the rota until at least May 26.
