The ordeal surrounding Jesse Lingard’s future had more ups and downs than an Alton Towers rollercoaster.

Initially, it was thought the Warrington-born star would leave Manchester United last month before the club decided they wanted to keep him.

United changed their minds again and said they were open to bids, but after telling Newcastle a £3m loan fee and full wages was required on top of a £12m survival bonus, a deal was unable to be completed – before ruling out a potential sale with just hours to go in the window.

It leaves Lingard waiting for the final six months of his contract to expire before choosing his next move – where the north east may be an interesting proposition.
