Online images have revealed a spooky millionaire’s mansion that he abandoned in the dead of night. Stills taken from Google Maps show the vast deserted property in Hertfordshire, just north of London. A once luxurious now rusting Bentley was spotted in the driveway, while the impressive garden resembled more of a jungle.
However shocking the exterior was, it did not compare to the spine-tingling interior of the gargantuan property discovered by an urban explorer in 2020.
The owner clearly had a reason to flee in a hurry, with clean crockery piled high in the dishwasher.
There were unfinished games of snooker and chess inside, and the kitchen’s ceiling had caved in.
High-end clothing was left hanging in the wardrobes, which it transpired belonged to the owner, Athanasios Tachmintzis, a 70-year-old Greek millionaire.
The property tycoon bought the house in 1999 for his large family, living there for nearly 20 years as a recluse with his two of his daughters and at least one son.
Sadly, Athanasios’s wife Sharon died in 2004 from cancer aged 52. They had been married 32 years.
The house was deserted in 2016 with haste, but there are no clues as to what took place.
Images discovered by the Daily Star Online show a host of disused vehicles sitting outside the derelict house.
Villagers who lived nearby to the family said Athanasios, better known as Thanos, was obsessed with security and once had guards positioned at the gates.
He also had three Dobermans on the grounds to protect his property.
Details for the house on property website Zoopla list it as having eight bedrooms and six bathrooms, as well as a whopping four reception rooms.
It isn’t known how much the house is worth and a lot of mystery surrounds Thanos’ business affairs.
On Companies House records, he was labelled a British property consultant when he was director of a property company between 1991 and 1995.
He was also a director in a company called Imperial Estates London Ltd, which had him listed as the sole shareholder in June 2017. But the firm never filed its accounts and was struck off Companies House in August 2019.
Thanos’ son Athanasios had his business Mirai Industek Ltd was based at the property, according to Companies House.
It was incorporated in January 2014, but dissolved in April 2019.
