The US President won the 2020 election after beating Donald Trump and was inaugurated in January 2021. Mr Biden made history after making Kamala Harris his vice-president, making her the first female to hold the position.

But now, Mr Biden has announced he will stand in the next election.

By the time the election takes place on the first Tuesday in November 2024 Mr Biden will be 80 years old.

He also said Ms Harris will be his running mate in the election.

A running mate is a person running together with another person on a joint ticket during an election.

During the press conference a day before his one-year anniversary in office, Mr Biden defended his presidency.

He claimed he had “outperformed” expectations and slammed Republicans for working against him.

Mr Biden said: “It’s been a year of challenges but also been a year of enormous progress.”

He also argued he did not make too many promises to the American people when he entered the White House.

“Think about this. What are Republicans for? What are they for?

“Name me one thing they’re for.

“I haven’t been able to do so far is get my Republican friends to get in the game and making things better in this country.”

Mr Biden could face another tough election as Mr Trump hinted he may run in the next election.

In February last year, Mr Trump teased he “might decide to beat them again”.

The former US President spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) where he lashed out at the Democrat who beat him in the US election.

In his speech, Mr Trump revealed he may stand in the 2024 election race.

He told a crowd of Trump supporters: “But who knows, I may even decide to beat them for a third time.”

Mr Trump continued: “I stand before you today to declare that the incredible journey we began together… there’s never been a journey so successful – we began it together four years ago and it is far from over.”

He also ruled out starting a new political party and said the Republican Party will be “stronger than ever before”.

He said: “I am not starting a new party. We have the Republican Party.

“It’s going to unite and be stronger than ever before.”
