Pain is the most characteristic symptom of PAD, but it’s a common characteristic of several other conditions too.

It is therefore important to look out for other telltale signs of PAD, like thickened and opaque toenails.

Thickening of the toenails occurs when the vessels in the feet start to narrow or thicken, making it harder for blood to circulate.

Toenail growth is also likely to be hindered by reduced blood flow, and should therefore never be ignored.

Complications of PAD occur when blood flow is decreased or absent, and include:

  • Amputation
  • Poor wound healing
  • Severe pain in the affected extremity
  • Stroke (three times more likely in people with PAD).
