However, it is actually illegal to own one of these coins and it is reported that if one is found in possession of a Double Eagle it will be seized immediately.

The coin was originally recalled from the general public by Theodore Roosevelt with the intent of banning anyone from owning gold.

The Double Eagles were then melted by the national mint although it is reported that a small amount of coins were able to escape.
