Students at a US university have been left injured after they collapsed a roof during a house party
Emergency services were called to East 13th Avenue, near Ohio State University in Columbus, at around 7.40pm local time to reports of a roof collapse during a party.
Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin shared that up to 45 people climbed on top of the building’s roof.
He said; “It was overloaded with students we’ve heard upwards of 15-45 students on the rooftop and it was not designed to have anyone on it and it gave way.”
He added that people heard a crack and the roof gave way. The injuries sustained varied but all 14 people are in a stable condition.
All victims were transported to several nearby hospitals with unspecified injuries, the Columbus Fire Department told the Post.
Some victims trapped under the debris were freed following the collapse, the department said.
“I would say there were like several hundred people outside a lot of panic happening and a lot of people were covered in black soot,” one OSU student told ABC 6.
Martin added: “The few people that were trapped, I believe, were probably unpinned.
“It was like their leg was caught under some of the structure and some of the students lifted that off the students. So everybody was kind of out.”
