Joe Biden has been furiously slammed as a “disgrace and embarrassment to the presidency of the United States” after he claimed he visited the island of Ireland to ensure “Brits didn’t screw around”.

The US President used his visit there last month to emphasise his opinion that the UK should be working more closely with the administration in Dublin to support Northern Ireland.

Mr Biden, who has long been proud of his Irish roots, has been a vocal critic of Brexit and in particular the UK’s previous stance on the hotly-disputed Northern Ireland Protocol.

The White House was even forced to come out in defence of the President during his recent trip after he was branded by many critics of being “anti-British”

But Mr Biden has once again triggered a furious backlash with scathing criticism of Britain with Nile Gardiner, a Washington-based foreign policy expert, raging on Twitter: “Joe Biden is a disgrace and an embarrassment to the presidency of the United States.”

He was responding to comments made by Biden to reporters when he was reflecting on last month’s visit to the island of Ireland.

The US President said: “I got to go back to Ireland for the, for the, the Irish Accords, to make sure they weren’t, the Brits didn’t screw around and Northern Ireland didn’t walk away from their commitments.”

Downing Street appeared to swerve directly responding to the remarks from Biden, instead saying Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Brexit deal with the European Union was about “protecting” the Good Friday Agreement.

When asked about the US President’s remarks, Mr Sunak’s official spokesman replied: “You will know that, obviously, the Windsor Framework was a culmination of substantive work between the UK and the EU, and at its heart the UK priority was always protecting the Good Friday Agreement.

“We have been consistent on that point throughout and we are pleased that between the UK and the EU we have been able to reach an agreement that works for the people of Northern Ireland, and for the whole of the UK.”

Last month’s trip to the island of Ireland saw Mr Biden briefly meet Mr Sunak in Belfast, before undertaking engagements across the Republic that culminated in a homecoming event in Ballina, Co Mayo that saw him celebrate his ancestral links to the town.

The visit had come just weeks after London and Brussels finally secured a deal aimed at addressing unionist concerns about the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Mr Biden had earlier sparked fury after the White House announced the trip just a couple days after it was revealed he hade told King Charles III he wouldn’t be attending his Coronation at Westminster Abbey last Saturday.

First Lady Jill Biden instead attended on behalf of the US, and the US President later accepted an invite from the King for a state visit to the UK.

But he soon faced a furious backlash, with Mr Gardiner telling Express.co.uk at the time: “Joe Biden is an extremely rude and abrasive figure.

“He clearly hates Britain, has knifed Britain in the back on a number of occasions, from a US-UK Brexit trade deal that he has tried to sink, through to lecturing Britain over Northern Ireland.

“He started his presidency by removing the Winston Churchill bust from the Oval Office at the White House. Joe Biden is no friend of Britain.

In a further scathing attack, Mr Gardiner continued: “Biden has treated Britain with complete and utter contempt and disdain.

“He is also very anti-Brexit, very pro-European Union and is someone who doesn’t have any affinity with Britain. Biden is the worst US president in the modern era in every respect.”

President Biden, who is intensely proud of his Irish ancestry, had been criticised by senior DUP figures in Northern Ireland, with MP Sammy Wilson claiming the he “has got a record of being pro-Republican, anti-Unionist, anti-British”.

Former First Minister and DUP leader Baroness Arlene Foster also suggested in a recent interview Mr Biden “hates the UK”.

But the White House quickly hit back at claims the US President was “anti-British” as began a series of engagements on the island of Ireland.

Amanda Sloat, senior director for Europe at the US National Security Council, said: “It’s simply untrue – the fact that the president is going to be engaging for the third time in three months, and then again next month and then again in June, with the Prime Minister of the UK shows how close our co-operation is with the UK.

“And before that, the president had numerous calls and meetings with prime minister Johnson, and prime minister Truss as well.”
