Kate shields George from previous tradition – but Meghan is ‘much more protective parent’

NewsKate shields George from previous tradition - but Meghan is ‘much more protective parent’

Prince George, nine, won’t be required to serve in the military before becoming King, which will buck centuries of tradition.

This is in contrast to previous royal generations, including his father Prince William and his grandfather, the current monarch King Charles, who both did military training.

This is due to changes in royal tradition brought about by his parents William and Kate, Princess of Wales.

Prince George and his younger brother Prince Louis will instead be able to pursue their own career goals before ascending to the throne and/or becoming full-time working royals.

Parenting expert Jo Austin has said that Kate wants to keep her children as “grounded” as possible, which falls in line with this new decision.

She said: “Kate obviously has the pressure of bringing up the future King, as both the late Queen and Diana had.

“But as someone who had a ‘normal’ childhood very much out of the attention of the public/aristocracy, she wants to ensure her children are kept down to earth and grounded.”

Kate grew up with her younger two siblings, Pippa and James, in Bucklebury, Berkshire and had a very normal childhood.

The Prince of Wales, on the other hand, was raised in the spotlight from the day he was born.

Ms Austin opined: “The Princess has spoken in the past about her fond memories of her childhood.

“She wants to ensure that her children have those same happy memories when they’re older.

“She told the ‘Happy Mum, Happy Baby’ podcast that they spend as much time outdoors as possible as a family.

“They also try to have as many adventures as they can when they’re together and one parent or another isn’t on a royal engagement.”

However, although this new decision about not wanting Prince George to join the military can be seen as protective, Ms Austin claimed that the Duchess of Sussex is more shielding as a parent.

She continued: “From afar, it seems that Meghan Markle is a much more protective parent.

“The Duchess of Sussex wants her children to have an upbringing as much out of the limelight as possible.

“She also cherishes the value of spending time outdoors and having fun, similar to that of Kate, as can be seen in their chicken coop which they lovingly look after in Los Angeles.”
