King Charles issued warning over sparking Harry and Meghan titles 'grudge match'

NewsKing Charles issued warning over sparking Harry and Meghan titles 'grudge match'

King Charles III has been warned stripping Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles would create a “whole new grudge match for them to go to town with”.

Harry and Meghan quit their roles as working members of the Royal Family in early 2020 when they relocated from the UK – first to Canada and then to Montecito in California, where they now live.

But despite no longer carrying out any official royal duties, the couple have still been able to retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.

They have been accused by many royal critics of using their titles to further their careers, having signed bumper media deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify.

Piers Morgan said on his TalkTV show broadcast on Sky News Australia: “We left the viewers on a cliff-hanger of whether Charles should strip his son Harry and Meghan of their titles.

“Should they be allowed to continue to exploit the royal titles while clearly causing demonstrable damage to the institution that afforded those titles on them?”

Royal author Tina Brown replied: “There is probably quite a lot of personal and emotional desire to do that but anyone who’s smart and advising Charles will say ‘don’t do it’.

“If he strips them of their titles, the fact is they have a whole new grudge match to go to town with.

“Right now, they are sort of fading, is the truth, both in the US and in the UK, certainly as fascination figures.”

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell also warned King Charles III “can’t take the royal titles away” from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

He said on Piers Morgan’s show: “Their USP is being royal and once they are royal and have titles, they can make money because they are considered to be the Royal Family in America.

“Charles can’t take the royal titles away from them because Harry was born a royal prince, so that makes Meghan a princess.”

Elsewhere, Ms Brown also warned Harry and Meghan are now entering a phase where they will have to “prove themselves in terms of celebrity content”, with all eyes now on what they will do next.

The couple starred in their own six-part documentary series on Netflix in December, while Meghan launched her Archetypes podcast series on Spotify last year.

Harry released his tell-all memoir, Spare, in January, which took aim at several members of his own family, and they had kept a relatively low profile since then.

But last month it was revealed Meghan had signed a deal with Hollywood talent agency WME, which represents several Hollywood powerhouses including Rihanna, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Matt Damon.

The firm’s CEO Ari Emanuel has also worked with the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Martin Scorsese and Charlize Theron.

Royal author Ms Brown said: “They (Harry and Meghan) are in their next kind of phase we’re they are going to have to prove themselves in terms of celebrity content. It’s all going to be about what’s next.

“I know Meghan is scrambling very hard now with what she is going to do with this huge deal she has with Netflix to create content.

“She hasn’t actually done any content – except for the documentary series.

“People are looking at that and saying ‘OK, we had that and you were a massive celebrity for the whole of the end of last year, but what’s next?'”
