Late Queen's unexpected 'absolute favourite' family member who made her 'giggle'

The late Queen Elizabeth had a special place in her heart for her niece Lady Sarah Chatto, who was the only one allowed to visit her lesser-known hideaway near Balmoral Castle.

This week, the 59-year-old Sarah is celebrating her wedding anniversary to artist and actor Daniel Chatto, 66, with whom she was spotted enjoying tennis at Wimbledon this week.

The couple tied the knot on July 14, 1994, at St Stephen’s Walbrook London before 200 guests, a much smaller affair than her brother Viscount Linley’s wedding to Hon. Serena Stanhope at Westminster Abbey the year before.

Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon’s only daughter has long been regarded as down to earth — she reportedly takes public transport — and usually stays out of the spotlight.

Nevertheless, she was high up among the late Queen’s affections with the former Monarch reportedly “adoring” her only niece.

Sources claim Sarah was the only relative the Queen took to Craigowan Lodge, her bolthole just a mile from Balmoral Castle.

The Queen and her niece became even closer after the death of the Monarch’s only sister in 2002.

The pair felt comfortable around each other, often “giggling” and having “fun”.

A royal insider told the Daily Mail in 2016: “The Queen adores Sarah and seeks out her company as often as possible. She is her absolute favourite younger royal.

“They are hugely at ease in each other’s company. Much giggling can be heard when they are together. They share a sense of loyalty, fun, duty and the ridiculous.”

Not only was she close to the Queen but King Charles, too.

Sarah, who studied art at the Royal Academy Schools, is said to be his closest cousin with the pair spending time painting together when at Balmoral where possible.

Sarah was also a chief bridesmaid at Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding in 1981 and is also godmother to the Duke of Sussex.

Both the former Prince and Princess of Wales attended Sarah and Daniel’s wedding almost 30 years ago.

But this caused a bit of a stir at the time as it was the first event attended by both Charles and Diana since he admitted to having an affair with Queen Camilla.

The wedding ceremony was famously short, lasting just half an hour, before the party headed to what was then the Queen Mother’s residence, Clarence House, for the reception.

The newlyweds then went on a honeymoon to India, where they first met on the set of the film Heat and Dust in 1983 where she worked as a wardrobe assistant and he had a small part in the film.

The couple now live in Kensington, London, and have two children, Samuel and Arthur, who are both in their Twenties.
