If United miss out on the top four, Ronaldo could opt against the option to extend his current deal by 12 months and leave Manchester for good.

His decision will largely depend on what the Red Devils achieve in the remainder of this season and who they choose as their next permanent manager.

Given Ronaldo’s influence on the pitch and commercially, new CEO Richard Arnold is tasked with a high-pressure situation in the opening months of his tenure.

Arnold, currently Group Managing Director, replaces Ed Woodward at the helm in February and faces a battle to keep Ronaldo happy.
