On Monday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain, Meghan Markle’s dad Thomas said it was cruel not being able to see his grandchildren
Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley after recovering from a severe stroke, Thomas expressed he wants to put the past behind them.
During the chat, he claimed he hadn’t seen either Meghan or Prince Harry in five years, as the last time they spoke he was in hospital before their wedding.
Richard commented: “If that was me and I was on death’s door for quite a few weeks and months and my daughter turned her back on me, I’d be heartbroken.”
Asking how he feels about the whole situation as so much time has passed since then, Thomas agreed that he was hurt.
He said: “I guess heartbroken, I’m very upset by it as well because this is a cruel thing to do to a grandparent, not just to me but to the King of England as well.”
As Susanna highlighted that the father and daughter no longer have contact directly, she questioned what he’d want her to know should she be watching the show.
He said: “Put the past behind us and allow me to see my grandkids. In California, I can actually sue to see them but I don’t want to do that.
“The other thing is that I’ve done nothing wrong.”
He told Susanna and Richard he’s a loving father and Meghan knows that having lived with him before.
Thomas continued: “There is no excuse for her to treat me this way, no excuse to treat the King that way as well.
“It’s no excuse to treat grandparents that way.”
Although Meghan and her father had a good relationship growing up, tensions started to rise when Thomas was making headlines in the build-up to the royal wedding.
After staging paparazzi photos preparing for the occasion, it was reported that he would no longer be attending to give Meghan away.
During his conversation with Richard and Susanna, Thomas claimed Meghan isn’t the person he once knew as his daughter.
Asked if he blamed Harry for that, he added: “I don’t know if I blame her or Harry. I think she has an influence on Harry more than he does on her.”
Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am
