'Opportunist' cat burglar steals hundreds of pounds of items from neighbours

News'Opportunist' cat burglar steals hundreds of pounds of items from neighbours

An “opportunist” cat burglar has been found to have stolen hundreds of pounds worth of items over the last four years with its owner now frantically trying to return the items to their rightful owners.

The perpetrator, Harry, an adorable black and white cat, has reportedly stolen six items from neighbours in Darley Abbey, Derby, in the past week alone.

Harry’s owner Donna Hibbert said she believes the items her beloved pet brings home are presents for her.

She said: “I think cats like to bring their owners treats, that’s the psychology behind it.‌”

“It’s more often objects rather than birds or mice, which I’m grateful for.”

Over the past four years, Ms Hibbert believes Harry has made off with more than £300 worth of items.

Ms Hibbert said some of the items had been taken from outdoor washing lines but that some had most likely been pinched from inside people’s homes.

“If he sees an opportunity, he takes it,” said Ms Hibbert.

“There was a red shoe, and it was quite an expensive brand.”

“The sports bras are from M&S so they are not going to be cheap.”

“We had a purse the other day but nothing was in it.”

Harry’s brother, Luna, also seems to have picked up the habit of stealing items but has taken a more environmental approach, picking up crisp and cigarette packets instead of invading neighbour’s homes.

In a bid to return the stolen items to their rightful owners Ms Hibbert now photographs the stolen items and posts them on the Spotted: Darley Abbey Facebook page.

She said: “I was really concerned about some poor person in the village thinking ‘I’m sure I put these out on the line’ or ‘I had these in the house’ and they’ve vanished.”

“On Facebook our neighbour right next to us saw the post and said ‘They’re mine, I thought I was going mad’.”

“This week we’ve had six different items, which are in carrier bags ready to be returned to their owners.”
