Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 'only of interest because they're royals'

NewsPrince Harry and Meghan Markle 'only of interest because they're royals'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “need reminding that they are only of interest because they are royal”, according to a royal commentator, as the couple continue to generate huge attention at the Invictus Games.

The Sussexes broke away from the Royal Family in 2020 to set up their own separate lives in California, however Harry founded Invictus in 2014, when he was still a working royal.

Although the sporting contest for ill and injured veterans has continued to be a success, Richard Fitzwilliams claims this has only been able to happen because of his royal position.

He wrote for Express.co.uk: “Harry’s charitable work has been remarkable but he has been able to achieve it only because of his royal status. This states the obvious, but the Sussexes sometimes need reminding that they are only of interest because they are royal.”

Some recent figures have suggested the couple are becoming less popular in the US, however Mr Fitzwilliams notes their brand is still able to attract “international fascination”.

In an effort to build their brand and live independently from the royals financially the couple signed multi-million dollar deals with the likes of Spotify and Netflix to produce new content, which has had mixed levels of success.

Their documentary series Harry & Meghan was a huge hit, but Heart of Invictus, executively produced by the Prince, has not been streamed in such large numbers.

Earlier this year it was announced that the Sussexes had parted ways with Spotify after just one series of Meghan’s podcast Archetypes, with one executive accusing the couple of being “grifters”.

Mr Fitzwilliams also speculated that Harry and Meghan could lose their deal with Netflix before their contract is due to end in 2025, thanks to the end of the platform’s biggest royal services.

Netflix is set to air the sixth and final series of The Crown before the end of the year, with the expert alleging the Sussexes may not be so useful as collaborators once the general public’s interest in the royals has waned.

The Invictus Games 2023 will also be coming to a close tonight, with a spectacular closing ceremony to be livestreamed from the stadium on Saturday evening (September 16).

The Duchess has been tipped to be making an “emotional” speech to the veterans and their families, a few days after her impromptu address at a reception held for Invictus on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the crowd Meghan explained why she had been a little late to arrive, as she flew in on Tuesday from Los Angeles, three days after the opening ceremony.

She said she had been at home in Montecito getting her children settled, but added she was thrilled to finally be able to join them for the tournament.
