Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are “no longer attached” to the Royal Family, and this will forever remain the status quo, one royal author claims.
It comes more than three years after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as working royals and relocated to California, where they are currently raising their two children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two.
The couple did not waste time following ‘Megxit’ – they swiftly signed multi-million-pound deals with streaming giants Netflix and Spotify that would see them release a steady stream of content over the next few years.
This was accompanied by the now-infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey and Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare, which put the monarchy on the backfoot.
Despite being the main thrust of their output, the Sussexes are now breaking away from the Firm – and in more ways than one, Clive Irving, author of The Last Queen and royal columnist at The Daily Beast tells Daily Express US.
He explained: “Harry and Meghan’s celebrity used to rest on the former’s connection to the Royal Family, but they’ve now been celebrities in their own right for so long that they don’t need to trade on that anymore. That’s no longer part of their lives.”
Irving continued: “Harry and Meghan’s future will be seen as completely independent of the monarchy.
“They are no longer attached to it in any meaningful way and I don’t think they can get back into it in any meaningful way either.”
The royal author added what this all means for Harry’s relationship with his brother remains to be seen.
The brothers have a complicated history, having tragically lost their mother, Princess Diana, at an early age.
But it was Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare, released earlier this year, that lifted the lid on his complex relationship with Prince William like never before.
The book is filled with examples that suggest Harry’s tormented by his status as the royal “spare” behind his brother.
The Duke of Sussex has always played second fiddle to William, who is first line to the throne. He has slowly moved down the line of succession with the birth of each of his older brother’s children.
Harry is currently fifth in line to the throne.
