Josh Kerr suffers heartbreak in 1500m heats as British athlete runs out of gas to be pipped over the finish line… but unlucky Team GB star could still qualify as fastest loser
Josh Kerr suffered heartbreak in the 1500m heats as the British star saw automatic qualification snatched from him on the finish line in Tokyo.
The Briton took to the first heat alongside reigning world champion Timothy Cheruiyot on Tuesday, with the athletes taking to a slippery track in a wet Japan.
Kerr – who trains in the United States – looked to be holding his own and led the pack alongside Cheruiyot. However, in the final 50 metres he ran out of gas and was pipped over the line, with only the top six qualifying.
He can still qualify for the semi-finals as a fastest loser, and will be holding his breath as the next two heats take place today. Britain’s Jake Heyward competes in Heat 2 this morning.
