Tragic teen killed after loose tyre flies off pickup and hurls through her windshield

NewsTragic teen killed after loose tyre flies off pickup and hurls through her windshield

An 18-year-old student was killed after a loose tyre crashed into her car and through her windshielf as she drove down the motorway, police say.

Lauren Collins was driving down Interstate 75 in a suburb of Cincinnati, in the US, on Sunday when a tyre became loose on a vehicle that was traveling on the northbound lanes of the interstate.

It bounced over the concrete barrier and soared into the windshield of Collins’ Buick LaCrosse in the southbound lanes, police say.

First responders from the Walton Fire Department arrived at the scene and “extricated” her from her mangled car, they said.

Collins was then transported to the nearby University of Cincinnati Medical Center “with life-threatening injuries”.

The seriously wounded teen later died from her injuries, according to the local sheriff.

According to police, Collins was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The truck and its driver have still not been identified, they said.

Authorities suspect it was a dual pickup truck with four tires along the rear axle.

Collins, from Independence, Kentucky, attended Simon Kenton High School and went to the University of Kentucky.

She had just finished her first year as a fashion merchandising major after graduating from high school in May 2022, her obituary states.

The teen will be remembered for her “vivacious personality” and was a “great friend”.

Her obituary also states Collins was a “free spirit” who was known for her “style and ability to light up a room”.

“I am blessed to of [sic] known you Lauren Collins and most grateful to have our families come together,” her cousin wrote on Facebook.

“I will treasure our times together and mostly our private ones. Fly high you beautiful soul, heaven is definitely gaining a precious angel today.”

Anyone with information about Collins’ death is asked to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 859-334-8466.
