Tucker Carlson exit DESTROYS Fox News with 'worst ratings since 9/11'

NewsTucker Carlson exit DESTROYS Fox News with 'worst ratings since 9/11'

Tucker Carlson’s departure from Fox News has caused the channel’s ratings to plummet to their lowest level “since 9/11” as hundreds of thousands of viewers have abandoned the network.

The primetime presenter raked in staggering viewing figures for Fox, regularly hitting more than three million a week.

But his substitute host Brian Kilmeade only managed to draw in 1.33 million viewers on Wednesday night, down 56 percent from the 3.05 million viewers his predecessor drew last Wednesday.

Kilmeade managed higher numbers earlier in the week, drawing in 1.7 million viewers on Tuesday and 2.59 million on Monday, when he told people who hadn’t already heard the news that Carlson would no longer be there.

Fox may have shot itself in the foot as the channel’s ratings have started to tumble drastically since booting out the anchor after his 13 years at the network.

According to CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy, Fox’s ratings have now hit a “staggering” low.

He said: “I think it’s also noteworthy…that without Carlson in the 8 pm hour over at Fox News, the ratings over there are really collapsing.

“Last night, in the key advertiser-supported, coveted 25 to 54 demo, they saw the worst ratings since pre-9/11. That’s a really staggering drop over at Fox News.

“The hour before it actually rated higher than the 8 pm hour, which is something of an anomaly over at Fox – something certainly that never happened when Tucker Carlson was in that hour.”

Tucker Carlson’s exit video raked in even more viewers than he normally did for his primetime news show.

Mr Carlson took to Twitter on Wednesday as he broke his silence for the first time since his sacking, attracting a 1.8 million views in just one hour after its release.

But by 1pm ET on Thursday, the video had been watched by a whopping 17.3 million users, and seen on the timeline of the social media app 57.8 million times.

Fox News said in a statement: “According to Nielsen Media Research, at 8PM/ET FOX News Channel was still the most-watched cable news network in total viewers. Additionally, FOX News continues to be highest-rated cable news channel in viewers and the younger demo.”

In the two-minute video, Carlson took aim at his former employer in a furious rant.

He said he now realises how “unbelievably stupid most of the debates you see on television are,” calling them “completely irrelevant”, adding that they “mean nothing”.

Anthony Burr, PR expert and founder of Burr Media, told Express.co.uk that the network’s decision to boot out Carson is “seismic”.

He said: “Tucker Carlson leaving is seismic. There’s no sugar coating it. He has created a whole new sub viewership of 3m+ who tuned in, cult-like to his prime time show, week in week out and he tapped in to those ‘MAGA’ fanatics who were so rampant during the Trump presidency.”

Multiple sources close to the situation have claimed that the decision to fire Carlson came straight from media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the chair of Fox Corporation.

But Fox is yet to reveal the exact reason for Carlson’s firing.
