The Britannia hotels have long been dubbed the UK’s worst chain of hotels with an infamous array of tragic reviews.
There are some pretty grim judgements dished out on Tripadvisor for many Britannia hotels, which last year was named as one of the worst hotel chains by Which? after coming bottom in a consumer survey for the tenth year in a row.
But one group bargain hunting vacationers are loving their stays at the hotels which are located across the UK with stays advertised from £29 a night.
The Grand Hotel in Scarborough – which has a Tripadvisor rating of two and a half out of five overall – is coming up trumps of late.
Tripadvisor user Thomas M gave the hotel four out of five for his August stay.
He said: “Decided to extend our stay. We really did enjoy our stay in the family room.
“Always love staying at the Grand Hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful.”
On August 4 fellow user Sean1Lesley gave the hotel five out of five.
They said: “Just had a fantastic five night’s stay in the Grand Scarborough with the best sea view. Great value for money staff are so helpful – especially Barbara on reception.”
And on the same day another Tripadvisor user, Tracy R, rated the hotel four out of five.
She said: “Wasn’t sure what to expect after reading the reviews. All I wanted was a cheap breakaway for a couple of nights.
“Check in was quick and the staff were lovely. Our sea view room was spotless and had everything we needed. The beds were comfy and we had a great night’s sleep each night.”
But not everyone was quite as impressed with what’s on offer.
In July William G wrote on Tripadvisor: “This hotel was the worst we’ve ever experienced in all our years of travelling throughout the UK, Europe and North America.
“It looks very imposing from the outside but the interior is so different. Our room was shabby to say the least. ‘Dirty’ doesn’t quite go far enough.”
The Britannia Hotel Manchester also has some recent fans – despite scoring 2.5 overall on Tripadvisor.
Tripadvisor Uuer Keith122 gave the central Manchester hotel five out of five after his June stay.
He said: “Usual 3* hotel service one can expect from Britannia hotels chain. Well maintained with responsive services. Food well priced for services provided and open long hours.”
Nicole V who stayed in July agreed with his five star rating saying.
She said: “The room is clean and tidy. The stairs are mental. It’s like a vortex into the past. It’s so decadent. Would recommend to a friend for sure. I will be visiting again.”
But the reviews for the venue varied wildly with fellow Tripadvisor user Ciara R saying giving it a measly one out of five.
She said: “Avoid! Felt so unsafe in this hotel with the security on the door making you feel like you were doing something wrong just by being there.
“Room stifling hot, noise throughout the hotel was ridiculous could hear the room next me every word said. Worst hotel stay I ever had.”
