According to Harvard Health, visceral fat lies “deep within the abdominal cavity, where it pads the spaces between our abdominal organs.” The condition is associated with metabolic disturbances and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. One drink, however, may be helpful in reducing visceral fat by boosting metabolism and curbing hunger.
According to reports in Fox News, peppermint tea is an effective “belly flattened”, which can help the stomach process fat.
This ensures other high-fat foods are digested properly and prevents the body from bloating.
Sonia Khan, the senior pharmacist at Medicine Direct [Sonia Khan | Pharmacist at Medicine Direct UK Online Pharmacy], explained: “Peppermint can help to reduce visceral fat because it has been shown to aid digestion and ensure good metabolism rates.
“Both a good metabolism and a functioning digestive system are important for weight loss, so enjoying some peppermint tea can be highly beneficial for people looking to lose some belly fat.”

In one study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology, researchers observed promising effects on both lipid and glycemic profiles of 25 students.
They explained: “Peppermint is widely consumed by the population for different purposes, but not for the treatment of dyslipidemia.
“The objective of this study was to examine the effect of this plant on human biochemical and […] blood pressure based on the administration of peppermint juice twice daily for 30 days.”
To determine the plant’s effects, researchers collected blood samples before and after peppermint treatment was administered.
The results indicated that 41.5 percent of the subjects showed a reduction in glycemic, 66.9 percent in total cholesterol levels and 52.3 percent in LDL indices.
The findings also revealed that 52.5 percent showed a decrease in blood pressure and 48.7 percent in BMI.
The researchers concluded: “The use of peppermint by humans can be considered beneficial in the prevention and treatment of risk factors of chronic degenerative diseases.”
Some research into the plant explains that peppermint tea works by relaxing the abdominal muscles and increasing the flow of bile, which in turn improves fat digestion.
What’s more, research has demonstrated that peppermint tea can support regular bowel movements.
This can help prevent constipation, which in turn can lower the risk of inflammation and bloating as well.
Nutritionist doctor Simran Saint from Fortis Hospital told NDTV Food: “Peppermint tea helps in aiding weight loss, reduces heartburn, makes your skin glow, induces sleep and provides satiety, further helping you lose weight.
“There is barely any side effect of peppermint tea, so you can drink any time you want to.”
Finally, one study conducted by the Wheeling Jesuit University in 2007, found that inhaling peppermint may reduce hunger levels.
For the study, the subjects of the study were asked to complete a peppermint inhalation task and a non-inhalation task every two hours.
Commenting on the results, the researchers said: “The primary implication of these results is that peppermint science can be used as an effective adjunct to decrease appetite, decrease hunger cravings, and consume fewer calories, which may lead to weight reduction and greater overall health.”
