The Ukrainian leader invited the former Chancellor and former French President to visit the city of Bucha to witness the brutality of Russia. The suburban centre 23 miles northwest of Kyiv was liberated last week, with reports emerging of atrocities committed against civilians. Volodymyr Zelensky singled out Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy as they led members in the 2008 NATO Summit during which Ukraine was refused access to the alliance.
Mr Zelensky said in his latest address: “I invite Ms. Merkel and Mr. Sarkozy to visit Bucha and see what Russia’s policy of concessions has led to over the past 14 years.
“See with your own eyes the tortured and slain Ukrainians.”
Mr Zelensky suggested Ukraine had the chance to be taken out of a so-called “grey zone” between NATO and Russia.
He continued: “The gray zone, where Moscow thinks it’s allowed to do anything. Even the most terrible war crimes.”
